CGHE Annual Conference 2023 – From Higher to Tertiary: Democratising Post-School Education

Elisa Brewis is a Research Associate at CGHE and is currently working on Project 8 ‘Local and global public good of higher education: A 10 nation study’.

Gemma Derrick is Associate Professor (Research Policy & Culture) at The University of Bristol and a CGHE Co-Investigator on CGHE Project 3, ‘Research on Research: the research function and mission of higher education’.

Ariane de Gayardon is Assistant Professor at the Center for Higher Education Policy Studies (CHEPS) at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Her research focuses on the financing of higher education internationally and its interaction with equity, including topics such as free higher education and student debt.

Lee Rensimer is a Lecturer in Education Studies at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society and a Deputy Director of CGHE. He was previously a Research Associate on CGHE Project 9, ‘Mapping supranational higher education space’, and continues to work with the co-investigators of that project on the geopolitics of regional higher education spaces.

Nicholas Barr is Professor of Public Economics at the LSE and author of numerous articles and over twenty books, including The Economics of the Welfare State (2020), Financing Higher Education: Answers from the UK (with Iain Crawford) (2005), and Pension Reform: A Short Guide (with Peter Diamond) (2010). His policy work includes spells at the World Bank and IMF, and active participation in the debate on financing higher education, in which he and his colleague Iain Crawford have been described as the architects of the 2006 reforms in England. Dr. Hoonhui Cho is a visiting researcher in the ESRD/RE Centre for Global Higher Education at the University of Oxford and a senior official of the Ministry of Education in the Republic of Korea. He has been working as an educational policy practitioner since 2004 in the South Korean government. In the meantime, Hoonhui finished his doctoral thesis on the Korean state and its approaches to policy making in higher education at the University of Oxford in 2014. His research interest includes higher education governance and policy, research assessment and comparative higher education.

Dr Aline Courtois is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of Bath. Previously, she was a Research Associate at CGHE, where she was involved in the projects ‘Local and global public good contributions of higher education’, ‘Internationalisation of HE as a public good’ and ‘Brexit and higher education in the UK and Europe’. She has published widely on elite education in Ireland; internationalisation and student mobility; the impact of Brexit on higher education; and academic mobility and precarity.

Rebecca Schendel is the Managing Director of the Center for International Higher Education at Boston College (USA). Her research considers the impact of higher education on human development in resource-poor contexts, with an emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa. Particular areas of focus include teaching and learning within universities, the role of faculty development initiatives and the links between curricular and pedagogical choices and student success.

Sharon Stein is an Assistant Professor of Higher Education at the University of British Columbia (Canada), and a Visiting Professor with the Chair for Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation at Nelson Mandela University (South Africa). In her work, she asks how higher education can confront local and global challenges in more socially and ecologically accountable ways. She is a founding member of the Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures Collective, and author of Unsettling the University: Confronting the Colonial Foundations of US Higher Education (JHU Press, 2022).

Huw Morris is Honorary Professor of Tertiary Education at the Institute of Education, University College London where he is on secondment from the Welsh Government. Between 2013 and 2022 he was Director of Skills, Higher Education and Lifelong Learning within the Welsh Government where he was responsible with colleagues for the oversight of universities, colleges, apprenticeship providers, Careers Wales and government funded education and training programmes for people over the age of 16. Before working in Welsh Government he held academic posts in a range of universities moving from research assistant to deputy vice chancellor over a 25 year period.

Preeti Shroff-Mehta currently serves as a professor and director of executive programs at Medill, Northwestern University. She has more than 25 years of experience in international projects and academic management with global institutions including the World Bank, USAID, UN, World Learning, John’s Hopkins, University of Maryland, and School for International Training (SIT) in Washington DC, Vermont and around the world.

Krystian Szadkowski, PhD is a researcher at the Scholarly Communication Research Group of Adam Mickiewicz University. His interests cover Marxist political economy and transformations of higher education systems in Central Eastern Europe, as well as the issues of the public and the common in higher education. He worked as a researcher for Education International (Brussels, Belgium) and as a consultant in policy projects funded by Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In 2018 he was a visiting researcher at Centre for Global Higher Education, Institute of Education, University College London.

Richard Watermeyer is a sociologist and professor of higher education and co-director of the Centre for Higher Education Transformations at the University of Bristol. His research is predominantly concerned with critical analyses of change and disruption in higher education affecting the organisation and governance of universities and science; academic identity and research praxis; and the public role and contribution of universities and scientists. His recent books include Competitive Accountability in Academic Life: The Struggle for Social Impact and Public Legitimacy (Cheltenham: Edward Elgar, 2019); The Impact Agenda: Controversies, Consequences and Challenges (Bristol: Policy, 2020); and The Handbook on Academic Freedom (Cheltenham, Edward Elgar, 2022). He is currently writing a new book on the efficacy of academics’ policy engagement.

Professor the Baroness Alison Wolf CBE is the Sir Roy Griffiths Professor of Public Sector Management at King’s College London. She sits as a cross-bench peer (Baroness Wolf of Dulwich) in the UK House of Lords. She was the founding Chair of Governors of King’s College London Mathematics School, and remains a governor and vice-chair.

Alison Wolf served in the No 10 Policy Unit, as part-time adviser on skills and workforce to the UK Prime Minister, from February 2020 to February 2023. Immediately prior to this, she was a panel member for the independent Review of Post-18 Education and Funding chaired by Sir Philip Augar. In 2019 she delivered the annual King’s lectures, on ‘Universities. the economy and the state’.
