CGHE Webinar 89

The academic adaptation of western students studying in Chinese universities

Date: Thursday, 6 September 2018 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Location: Clarke Hall, UCL Institute of Education
Speaker(s):
  • Shuiyun Liu, Beijing Normal University, China

Chinese universities and colleges have become active participants in the process of internationalisation. More and more Chinese students go abroad and an increasing number of foreign students come to China to study.

Many researchers have examined the experience of Chinese students in western countries, but the experience of western students in China has not been fully discussed.

This seminar focuses on the academic adaptation of western students in Chinese universities. In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 western students studying in China to examine the academic challenges they faced in China and their adjustment.

Pedagogy is context-dependent and value-laden. With a big difference between the western and Chinese pedagogies, western students have experienced learning and communication dislocation in Chinese universities.

Previous studies suggest that the adjustment of western students studying in China is less successful than that of Chinese students studying abroad. Dr Liu discusses the relationship between institutions and personal behaviours to analyse the motivation of students’ academic adaptation.
