International research collaboration has attracted scholarly attention in the context of internationalisation in higher education and science. In this session, Kexin will present a mixed study on the patterns and dynamics of China-UK research collaborations in education studies. She will examine the research activities at multiple levels in the two countries through perspectives of glonocal heuristic and a critical stance towards centre-periphery model. Based on the bibliometric data and interviews, her study present findings in the following aspects:

  • Trends and changes in the production volume of education publications
  • Distribution of first authorship of collaborated education publications
  • Profiles of citation origins in education publications
  • Funding sources of education publications
  • The initiation of education research collaborations and dissemination of research results
  • The distribution of responsibilities among collaborators
  • Challenges arising in collaboration process

Her study concludes that education research in ‘periphery’ countries is not necessarily conditioned or limited by ‘centre’ countries; national agency has the potential to combat the hierarchies in global social science practices. International collaborations can potentially enrich epistemic integration in global social theories.
