Panel: Who are our universities for?
Who do our universities belong to? Are they democratic? What would universities look like if they were open access? In this panel discussion we discuss alternative futures for higher education.
After four decades of neoliberal higher education policy we explore how an alternative system could work and what it should look like. We discuss what would be needed to make structural changes to open up and democratize our universities and how this would fit within broader social and economic changes.

Tom Sperlinger is Professor of Literature and Engaged Pedagogy at the University of Bristol. With his co-authors Josie McLellan and Richard Pettigrew he wrote Who are universities for? published last year by Policy Press.
Faiza Shaheen is the director of the Centre for Labour and Social Studies (CLASS) and is the prospective Labour Party candidate for Chingford and Woodford Green.
Sol Gamsu is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Durham University and co-editor with Richard Hall of an anthology of policy writing on alternative politics of HE for CLASS.
