Changing Higher Education for a Changing World explores higher education in the major higher education regions including China, Europe, the UK and the USA. It sharply illuminates key issues of public and policy interest across the world. Do research universities make society more equal or more unequal? Are students graduating with too much debt? Who do we want to be attending universities? Will learning technologies abolish the need for bricks-and-mortar higher education institutions? What can countries do to improve their scientific performance? How can comparative teaching assessment and research assessment become much more effective?

Following an introduction by co-editors William Locke and Simon Marginson, other contributors will discuss their chapters*, with time after this for Q&A, chaired by co-editor Claire Callender. Please join us to discuss this important new book.

Professor Claire Callender

Claire Callender is Professor of Higher Education Studies at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society. She is a Deputy Director of CGHE. Claire led on CGHE Project 5, ‘Student loan debt and graduate decision-making’ which explored the impact of income-contingent student loan debt on English graduates’ lives using both quantitative and qualitative methods. It showed how loan debt can have negative effects on graduates’ lives.

Professor William Locke

William Locke is Professor and Director of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education, University of Melbourne and was a CGHE Co-Investigator on the former Project 3.1, ‘Alternative, emerging and cross-border higher education provision and its relationship with mainstream provision’.

Professor Simon Marginson

Simon Marginson is Professor of Higher Education at the University of Oxford, founding Director of the ESRC/RE Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE), Joint Editor-in-Chief of Higher Education, and a Professorial Associate with the University of Melbourne. Simon’s research is focused primarily on global and international higher education, the global science system, higher education in East Asia, the contributions of higher education, and higher education and social inequality. Simon led CGHE’s project 8 which investigated the public good role of higher education in ten countries. The project found that while a broad notion of public good has been largely emptied out of policy in the English-speaking countries, where economic definitions of individualised pecuniary value are dominant, recognition of the broader individual and collective outcomes of higher education continues in different ways in other jurisdictions including France, Finland, South Korea and China. The study in England discovered however that despite the narrow economic framing used by Westminster policy makers, both higher education practitioners and policy professionals believe that higher education makes a large and multiple contribution to both national and global public goods.

Professor Bruce Chapman

Bruce Chapman is Professor of Economics at the Australian National University and was a CGHE Co-Investigator on the former Project 2.5, ‘Issues in the economics of higher education financing’.

Professor Lorraine Dearden

Lorraine Dearden is Professor of Economics at IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society and was a CGHE Co-Investigator on the former Project 2.2, ‘HE choices and post-HE destinations to age 25: parental background and effects of higher education funding reform in the UK’.

Dr Dung Doan

Dung Doan is a Research Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU) and was a CGHE Research Associate on the former Project 2.5, ‘Issues in the economics of higher education financing’.
