Amid growing debates about globalization of higher education, an analysis of race as a structural force underlying this global phenomenon remains undertheorized. This presentation provides a critical race temporal account of globalization of higher education by critically examining mobility trends in global higher education, namely: (a) mobility of imaginaries, (b) mobility of people, and © mobility of resources. It demonstrates how Whiteness as futurity colonizes (or orients) global subjects’ imaginaries and reinforces the asymmetrical movements, networks, and untethered economies underpinning global higher education.

Associate Professor Maia Chankseliani

Maia Chankseliani is Associate Professor of Comparative and International Education at the University of Oxford, UK. She works at the intersection of tertiary education and development. Her work as part of CGHE Project 9 included a seminal paper on international development higher education, as well as explorations of regional spaces in higher education and cross-border flows of funding for globally visible research in the Global South.

Professor Riyad Shahjahan

Dr. Riyad A. Shahjahan is Associate Professor of Higher, Adult and Life Long Education at Michigan State University in the United States. He is an influential theorist and academic author in relation to globalisation and comparative international education, including race, coloniality and the critique of methodological nationalism.
