Intercultural relationship development at university: a conceptual framework

Date: Thursday, 14 September 2017 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Location: Committee Room 2, UCL Institute of Education
Speaker(s):
  • Kazuhiro Kudo, Murdoch University and Dokkyo University

Overview

For more than four decades, studies in higher education have, on the one hand, substantiated the significance of positive intercultural interactions between international and domestic students, but on the other hand, reported widespread evidence of limited relationships between the two groups.

Against this backdrop, this seminar aims to revisit current conceptualisations of intercultural relationships in university settings. The seminar proposes a conceptual framework that captures the developmental nature of positive intercultural relationships (e.g. friendship, romantic relationships) and acknowledges the dynamic interactions between individual and environmental dimensions in this development.

This framework is expected to lead to new research agendas, as well as to stimulate educational practices that promote intercultural student relationships in various national/regional and institutional contexts.

Booking

All seminars are free and open to the public. No advance booking required.
