Scholarly or socially relevant? The European landscape of academic associations

Date: Thursday, 8 June 2017 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Location: Committee Room 2, UCL Institute of Education
Speaker(s):
  • Tatiana Fumasoli, UCL Institute of Education

Overview

The presentation analyses the missions of more than 300 academic associations whose headquarters are located in a European country and whose members originate mainly from European countries.

Drawing from the general expectations of world polity theory, of studies on professions and professionalism, as well as on research on interest groups, Dr Fumasoli will provide a nuanced analysis of a diversified landscape.

A cluster analysis based on the aims of the missions identifies five types of associations: multi-aim scholarly, multi-aim social, standards, discipline-oriented and profession-oriented.

Dr Fumasoli will discuss the implications of the ongoing European integration in higher education and research, as well as the structuring of the European academic field.
