In memory of Christine Humfrey MBE, founding International Office Director, University of Nottingham.
The University of Nottingham’s pioneering approach to internationalisation is, in so many ways, built on the work of Dr Christine Humfrey (née Shinn), the founding Director of the International Office who sadly passed away on July 10th 2020. From the early 1980s, when the UK’s fee regime for international students dramatically changed, Christine led a transformation in international higher education at the University and was at the forefront of internationalisation across the sector. Nottingham’s International Office was one of the first of its kind within the sector and was distinctive because of its integration of recruitment and partnerships with student welfare and well-being and support for research collaboration.
This webinar will explore the evolution of UK university internationalisation strategies since the 1980s, celebrating Christine’s championing of an holistic approach, through contributions examining the success of Transnational Education, the Prime Minister’s Initiative for International Education and a focus on international student care, and universities wider role in supporting capacity development and collaboration across the Commonwealth.
The webinar will also provide friends and former colleagues with an opportunity to remember Christine and consider, as she continued to do in retirement and as a teacher on the PG Cert for International Student Advisers, the current and future direction of UK university international strategies.

Christine Ennew is Provost at the University of Warwick where she supports the Vice Chancellor in the academic leadership of the University. A key aspect of her role is leading the development and delivery of the University’s academic strategy, ensuring that Warwick remains competitive and relevant within HE and beyond. She is responsible for the efficient and effective use of academic resources (including departmental finances, capital planning and space management, and information resources).
Christine graduated from Cambridge University and completed her PhD at Nottingham. Until recently she was Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Nottingham where she managed the University’s ambitious international strategy for 5 years. She also served for three and a half years as Provost and CEO Nottingham’s first international campus which is located to the south of Kuala Lumpur She joined the University of Warwick in August 2016.
She is currently a member of the Advisory Board of the Observatory on Borderless Higher Education, a member of the Board of Directors for Common Purpose Student Experiences, a Fellow of the Head Foundation and represents the University of Warwick on the Boards of a range of associated companies.
Tim Gore is Chief Executive Officer of the University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP). He has held senior leadership positions in career postings in France, UK, India, Jordan, Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong with experience in higher education; cultural relations; diplomacy and commercial enterprise. He has worked closely with a range of government organisations in the countries he has served in receiving the OBE for his work in India-UK bilateral relations while he was leading the British Council’s education work in India. ULIP has been a part of Franco British academic relations since the end of the 19th century and is in a unique positon as a research-led British campus in France offering a range of UK degree programmes.
Dr Joanna Newman MBE FRSA is Chief Executive and Secretary General of the ACU. She joined the ACU in April 2017 and is responsible for fostering and promoting the aims of the ACU. Before joining the ACU, Joanna was the Vice-Principal (International) at King’s College London where she was responsible for all international matters for the university. Joanna is a Senior Research Fellow in the History Faculty at King’s and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Southampton and has taught history at University College London and the University of Warwick. In 2014, she was honoured as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of her work promoting British higher education internationally.
Dominic Scott OBE was Chief Executive of UKCISA (the UK Council for International Student Affairs) from 2004 until he retired in May 2019 – and was in fact selected for the post by, amongst others, Christine Humfrey when she was a Trustee of UKCISA, working closely with her on numbers of projects over the years all focussed on the quality of the international student experience. Prior to that he had a 20 year career with the British Council including overseas postings to Norway, Egypt and India where he was Director of Arts and Education from 1995 to 2000 when the recruitment market first started its significant expansion. He now chairs the British Accreditation Council and is Honorary President of AASAP (The Association of American Study Abroad Providers/UK).
