In this first webinar of this three-part CGHE-OBREAL series, Ramon Torrent, President of OBREAL (Observatorio de las Relaciones UE – AL) makes the case for inter-regional higher education dialogue. Using examples, he will start by distinguishing between international, global, multilateral, plurilateral, regional, continental and inter-regional collaborations. He will offer a political and analytical framework from which to make sense of these dialogues. Drawing on his own professional biography, he will describe the different university associations that have been involved in inter-regional collaborations, as well as OBREAL’s role in promoting South – South – North(s) dialogue, their impact and their future. OBREAL is an association bringing together more than 100 universities, institutes and networks in Europe, Africa, and Latin America.

Ramon Torrent is President of Observatorio de las Relaciones UE – AL: OBREAL, an association of universities and higher education networks from the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and India. He was until his retirement in September 2017 a Professor of Political Economy and International Economic Law at the Universidad de Barcelona. He has coordinated a number of International, EU-funded, projects of cooperation in Higher Education with Latin America, the Mediterranean, the EU’s Neighbouring Countries and Africa. He launched the process of the Arab – Euro Conferences on Higher Education (AECHE) and was the scientific coordinator of the Horizon 2020 project EULAC Focus (“Giving Focus to the cultural, scientific and social dimension of EU – CELAC relations.
