The critical global educator: global citizenship education as sustainable development

Date: Thursday, 16 March 2017 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm
Location: Room 675, UCL Institute of Education
Speaker(s):
  • Maureen Ellis, UCL Institute of Education and Open University

Overview

This seminar is based on Maureen Ellis? recent book, The Critical Global Educator, (Routledge, 2016).

The book treats global citizenship education as sustainable development. It synthesises a number of theoretical approaches, including critical social theory, critical discourse studies and cultural historical activity theory, to provide critical global educators with a tool for self- and negotiated-evaluation.

Dr Ellis? empirical research ? surveys, focus-groups, interviews ? with over 500 international teachers, teacher educators, administrators and academics justifies the need to improve the reach, impact and integrity of global education for sustainable development.

Dr Ellis will discuss eight recommendations which address the political-economy and cultural-politics of sustainable global citizenship.
