CGHE Webinar Series: Research on Research Project

Alis is Professor of Philosophy of Education and Research Policy at the University of Oxford and Project Lead (Research on Research) at the ESRC Centre for Global Higher Education, as well as Social Sciences Division Advocate for Impact (Responsible Engagement and Innovation). In recent years, she was Director of Research in the Oxford University Department of Education and REF2021 coordinator for the unit. Through scholarly and professional collaborations, she hopes to champion knowledge, justice, generosity and integrity in research practices and discourses, research policy and research leadership and cultures in different types of organisation. She has led and collaborated on research projects, change and development initiatives, and administrative processes on impact and knowledge exchange, and held advisory and leadership roles in education reform and research assessment. She has conducted research on research ecosystems, values in research, open knowledge, impact, ethics and integrity, epistemic diversity, research careers, understandings of quality and excellence, research assessment, research in teacher education, philosophy of research, and principled research practice. Alis is the joint editor of the Oxford Review of Education, chief editorial advisor on Routledge Open Research (Education), and co-editor of the forthcoming ‘Handbook of Meta-Research’ (Elgar). Alis Oancea led CGHE Project 3, ‘Research on Research: the research function and mission of higher education’.

James Robson is Co-Director of Oxford University’s Centre for Skills, Knowledge, and Organisational Performance (SKOPE), Associate Professor of Tertiary Education Systems, and leads Oxford’s MSc in HE. He was a CGHE co-investigator on Project 3, ‘Research on Research: the research function and mission of higher education’.

Xin Xu (许心) is a Departmental Lecturer in Higher/Tertiary Education at the University of Oxford. Her research concentrates on higher/tertiary education and research.

Dr Jess Pilgrim-Brown is a sociologist and researcher in education. She focuses on issues relating to social class, gender and wider social inequalities. Her thesis research ‘Doing the heavy lifting, the experiences of working-class professional services and administrative staff in Russell Group universities’ was the first of its kind in the UK. Her research interests span sociological theory, innovative methods in qualitative research designs and research ethics. She is a current Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol and Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Oxford.

McQueen Sum is currently reading for a DPhil in Education at the University of Oxford. She is supervised by Professor Alis Oancea and Dr Victoria Elliott. McQueen is a member of the Centre for Global Higher Education interested in higher education, teaching, teachers’ work, and technology. Her research interests are influenced by her prior experiences of working as an academic tutor at the University of Hong Kong and a researcher for Khan Academy and HarvardX (edX).

Antonin Charet is currently Doctoral Teaching Fellow on the MSc in Comparative and International Education, teaching Foundations of Educational Research and Research Assistant for the Centre for Global Higher Education on the ‘Research on Research: the research function and mission of higher education’ project. Alongside his teaching and research roles, Antonin is completing a Doctoral study on the European Universities Initiative, the European Commission’s flagship higher education programme that seeks to set up European Universities through transnational university alliances.

Gemma Derrick is Associate Professor (Research Policy & Culture) at The University of Bristol. She is currently working on the interplay of research culture with principles of equity and social justice, with a focus on peer review, and how this influences research productivity and societal outcomes and the creep of external and internal research ‘change’ agendas. Gemma is currently the co-Chair of the Hidden REF, and works collaboratively with funding agencies, such as The Wellcome Trust, Research Council of Norway (Forskningsradet), as well as government research agencies (Research England, Australian Research Council) on aspects of research governance and evaluation.

Dr Julie Bayley is Director of Research Impact Development at the University of Lincoln, combining an academic and research management role to strengthen impact across the institution. Julie collaborates nationally and internationally on the development of impact literacy and healthy institutional practices for impact. She undertakes extensive consultancy across the research sector and has been appointed as Emerald Publishing’s Impact Literacy Advisor, alongside being Director of Qualifications for the Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA) and impact Co-I on an EPSRC funded project on equality, diversion and inclusivity in STEM.

Vincent Larivière holds the UNESCO Chair for Open Science and is a full professor at the Faculty of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Montreal, where he teaches research methods in information sciences and bibliometrics. Vincent is also scientific director of the Érudit platform, deputy scientific director of the Science and Technology Observatory, full member of the Interuniversity Research Center in Science and Technology and associate vice-rector for communication and strategic planning. He holds a BSc in Science, Technology and Society (UQAM), an MSc in History of Science (UQAM) and a PhD in Information Sciences (McGill), and also completed a postdoctoral internship at the Department of Information and Library Science at the Indiana University.

Tony Ross-Hellauer is leader of the Open and Reproducible Research Group (ORRG) at TU Graz and Senior Researcher at Know-Center. His research focuses on a range of issues related to open science evaluation, skills, policy, governance, monitoring and infrastructure. He is coordinator of the EC H2020 project ON-MERRIT researching issues of equity in Open Science and FAIR Data Austria, a major project to advance FAIR data practices at the national level. He is co-author of the Open Science Training Handbook, and co-leads Transpose, a grassroots initiative to build a crowdsourced database of journal policies for preprints and peer review.
